I realized I had an interest in art at an early age and began to paint and draw in grade school. I also had a great-aunt that was a very accomplished painter. By the time I reached high school, I knew that art would be my career. After high school and active military duty, I started college to study art. I was exposed to many different mediums of art and I was a lab technician in a metal smithing lab I was exposed to metal as an art form. After graduation, I taught art in Alaska. I was fortunate enough to remain in the outdoors, my other passion. After returning to Anaconda, I continued my career as an art teacher as well as continuing to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors and wildlife. I began to sculpt while I was teaching art. During the summer, I continued to work for the forest service spending 14 summers as a firefighter and smokejumper. I also obtained my big game guide license and guided for all species in big game in Alaska. I was beginning to enjoy some success in sculpting during this time and decided to pursue this as a full time career.
Where are you from and does the natural area around you provide inspiration or your work? I was born and raised in Anaconda, Montana and continue to reside there. I am inspired by the abundance of wildlife in the western United States as well as deriving inspiration from my many travels around the world especially Africa.
Style and my work: I have created bronze sculptures of many forms of wildlife and sporting art throughout the world, most reflecting my own personal experience. My style of sculpture is detailed and realistic and I strive for accuracy of anatomy with a goal to depict actual motion of my subject matter as I have experienced it as an outdoorsman and guide.
Over the years I have traveled to Alaska, Africa, and other areas of the world to hunt and fish, and have had the pleasure of sharing these experiences with my son and family. I have had many harrowing experiences with wildlife up close and personal including Alaskan brown bear and cape buffalo. These experiences have included guiding other hunters in Alaska and Montana and I have enjoyed their excitement when they have had a good outdoor experience.
