Randy Conner has been creating wood carvings for over 20 years. Randy creates the sculpture and focuses his attention to bringing his subject to “life”. The highly detailed wood carvings start from a block of wood (usually Tupelo), and captures the “spirit” and “attitude” of the bird. He then completes the sculpture by painting it with acrylics to make it realistic. The inspiration for Randy’s work comes from everywhere! Whether it be from meeting and talking with fellow artists at a great venues like the Waterfowl Festival, the Ward World Championships, the Lancaster County Woodcarving Show, or other locals shows nationally, or observing birds at his home in Candor, NY, sometimes even seeing a picture that piques his curiosity.
Randy currently competes in several world-level competitions and has steadily progressed, winning many ribbons and awards along the way. Twice, Randy has been featured in Woodcarving Illustrated with step by step instruction on how to carve birds. Randy very much enjoys carving all types of birds with individuality and beauty; capturing the essence of birds such as hawks, owls, songbirds, and even some game birds.
