Elm Burl Bowl – Knotty by Nature
This natural edge Elm Burl bowl came from the hills of West Virginia. The rim shows the outside of the burl, as nature created it. No two burls ever grow exactly alike, so when a bowl is turned with a natural edge rim, that rim is unique to that burl. Natural voids and cracks have been filled with a sparkly gold colored epoxy that gives the viewer a little unexpected character. The bowl measures 12″ in diameter x 4″ tall.

As a lifelong woodworker, Mike Cruz was introduced to the lathe in 2010. He had enough requests for purchases that in 2013 he began selling at local shows. Now, Cruz participates in nearly 20 local juried shows per year including The Waterfowl Festival, Academy Art Museum, Bethesda Row, Baltimore ACC show, Bethesda Fine Arts Festival, Rehoboth Art League Fine Arts Show, Frederick Festival of the Arts, and others. As a woodturner, he found my niche in turning wood bowls and platters from highly figured wood. Most of the wood he uses is local...from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. His works are a blend of utility and art. They are finished to be eye-catching centerpieces and accent pieces in your home or office, but but they can be used for things like fruit, salad, bread, and candies...if you wish.
