Big Leaf Maple Burl Bowl- Knotty by Nature
This Big Leaf Maple Burl bowl has come a long way…literally. Big Leaf Maple is a species that doesn’t grow on the East Coast. The wood was harvested in Oregon, and shipped to me. BLM burl is one of the most interesting and coveted domestic burls in the US. This bowl had many natural bark inclusions that take hours to pick out. I then fill the voids/inclusions with a colored epoxy which adds both a splash of color, and keeps whatever you may put into the bowl from falling through it. The bowl measures 17″ in diameter x 6″ tall.
Shipping is included within the Continental United States from the Artist’s location. Buyers outside the Continental U.S. will be charged an additional shipping fee.
As a lifelong woodworker, Mike Cruz was introduced to the lathe in 2010. He had enough requests for purchases that in 2013 he began selling at local shows. Now, Cruz participates in nearly 20 local juried shows per year including The Waterfowl Festival, Academy Art Museum, Bethesda Row, Baltimore ACC show, Bethesda Fine Arts Festival, Rehoboth Art League Fine Arts Show, Frederick Festival of the Arts, and others. As a woodturner, he found my niche in turning wood bowls and platters from highly figured wood. Most of the wood he uses is local...from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. His works are a blend of utility and art. They are finished to be eye-catching centerpieces and accent pieces in your home or office, but but they can be used for things like fruit, salad, bread, and candies...if you wish.
