Al is a self-taught artist and amateur naturalist having spent most of his life working at his art and studying the world’s wild creatures and the out-of-doors. While living in Minneapolis he fell under the tutelage of Les Kouba, a world renowned wildlife artist – who encouraged and aided him with his earlier painting efforts.
Al grew up amid the mountains and valleys, the deep forests and sparkling trout streams of northwestern Pennsylvania. It was in this environment where he spent much of his leisure moments developing his love and interest in the things of the natural world.
Inspired by the awe he experienced he turned to his brushes and paint as the tools he would use to capture moments he had lived and to provide them to others. His interests and avocations have found Al photographing, sketching and observing the wildlife across the frozen sub-arctic, the savannahs and forests of Africa and many wonderful places in between.
Al’s paintings are highly detailed images of subjects that may include wildlife of any kind from worms to whales, from humming birds to elephants. His paintings may be found in collections throughout North America and elsewhere in the world.
Al is the winner of several conservation stamp and print competitions in Minnesota, South Carolina and Maryland. His paintings have been judged best in show in many wildlife exhibits and festivals. He has contributed much of his artwork to conservation organizations, which have benefited them financially.
